  Photo Sonics, Inc. began its roots as Acme Tool
and Manufacturing in 1928. A short time later the company was manufacturing a major amount Animation Equipment for Walt Disney, Warner Brothers and Hanna Barbera.  During World War II, the product line progressed by the development of several high-speed cameras.  In 1965 the company developed a 360 frame per second pin-registered camera and named it the 4E.

This camera became the fastest camera of its type operating at threes times the top frame rate of its closest commercial competitor (Mitchell).  Soon after its development, Photo Sonics was contracted by L. B. Abbott of the Fox Studios camera department to build a modified version of the 4E camera for the making of Tora! Tora! Tora! The newly achieved frame rate of the 4E camera allowed the studio to build the miniature models 2/3 smaller than originally planed saving the company a substantial amount of the budget.  In the early 80’s the camera was reflexed and redesigned to accept most of the standard motion picture accessories.		    
       
  The camera was then renamed the 4ER.  Today, the 4ER remains the leader in high-speed high-resolution 35mm pin-registered image capture rendering images with clarity and color saturation only achievable with film. The Photo Sonics 35mm 4C, and 4ML cameras followed similar paths and also became very popular for special effects in both commercial and motion picture production.

The Photo Sonics Rental Department was formed in the late 70’s and continues its mission to provide the finest and most reliable high-speed film and digital cameras to the motion picture industry.  Together with lease agents in many countries, our staff provides an unmatched level of equipment maintenance, service, and support while constantly looking toward product improvement and development.
